Our Story Continues: Meet your Farmer
Welcome. I’m Shernette, the main grower behind Nurtured Nature Farm. It all started with my love for gardening and that started with my love for eating food, that well, tasted like food I grew up with. Coming from a background where the food I ate growing up was typically grown using traditional and organic growing practices (though it wasn’t called that), I missed that when I moved to Canada. The commercially grown produce from the grocery store just did not have the same taste. I really wanted to grow my own food, but alas, city living meant a lot of concrete, a lack of time and even less soil.
.
As such, my dream of a garden and great food right outside my door was put on hold. Eventually, I was finally able to move to a home in the burbs and for the first time, I had land on which I could grow. My first season there I was putting in veggies and fruits and an orchard right in my backyard. The experience was amazing and the food was awesome (pictures ⬅️ or ⬆️). This kept driving me and I wanted to share the bounty with my neighbours. This was the seed that germinated into my desire for a market garden. But again time was in short supply. With a full-time job and little kiddos around, there was no time to realize the market garden dream and so it had to be put on hold. After a few years, my family decided to make some life changes. We wanted more time with our children and more land, so that we could school from home and grow the food we loved (and that was good for us), using all that knowledge I had been accumulating in our garden. That’s when we decided to pack it all up and move to Cochrane, Ontario.
A new Phase Begins
Our first spring here, before we were even fully moved up, we were putting in a garden in whatever open space (and boxes) we could find on our land. It wasn’t enough. We needed more space. So next season, we called in the big guys ( logging industry, we’re looking at you 👀) and cleared just enough acreage around our home to accommodate our dream of a large garden. That was a few seasons ago and the beginning of what is today Nurtured Nature Farm. I’ve finally achieved what I’ve wanted to for years. Growing great tasting, nutrient dense and healthy food for my family and conveniently sharing the bounty with my local community. Hence, one of our favourite sayings – “We Grow Quality Food for our Family and Yours.”
Your Grower, Shernette.
